Why SmokeSpot exists
Smoking rules change from one city — and even one district — to the next. Many central wards ban street smoking and require designated areas, with fines for getting it wrong. SmokeSpot brings those scattered, often Japanese-only rules into one clean, multilingual map so travellers and residents always know where they can legally light up.
Where the data comes from
Each spot combines official city sources, public open data (including OpenStreetMap contributors) and community reports. Officially confirmed spots link to their source when available, and every spot shows when it was last verified.
How we keep it reliable
We never invent locations. A spot is either backed by an official source, confirmed by the community, or clearly flagged as “needs verification”. If a spot is closed or removed, anyone can report it.
Who builds it
SmokeSpot is an independent project published by Maxime Lemesle. It is not affiliated with any city government or tobacco company.
